The most important requirement for financial eligibility is that your household income should come to R350 000 or less per year. This means that if you add up everyone’s salaries in your house for the year and it comes to over R350 000, you won’t qualify.

NSFAS funded students living in self-catering residence will also benefit from receiving monthly living allowances and is perfect for working class families.
This financial aid is for any NSFAS students studying at one of the 26 public universities or one of the 50 technical vocational education and training colleges. If you are successful with your NSFAS application you will be funded for your whole multi-year qualification if you meet the academic eligibility.
There is good news for the millions of financially vulnerable adults who rely on the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant. Sassa has finally released the SRD grant payment dates for May 2024.
In March 2024, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana revealed that the SRD grant payment would be increased from R350 to R370. This means that individuals who have been approved for an SRD Grant payment in May 2024 will receive a payment of R370.
Sassa said approved SRD grant applicants will receive SRD grant payments from Monday, 27 May 2024 and will conclude on 31 May 2024.
Payments (for clients who are approved for May 2024) will be processed from 27-31 May 2024.
Sassa informed beneficiaries that their money will take between two and three days before it is reflected in their bank account. Once the money is reflected in their bank account, they can begin using tier grant money.
Funds will take about 2-3 working days to reflect in the client’s account after payment has been processed.
Sassa encouraged grant beneficiaries to check their SRD grant status to ensure they have been approved for payments in April.
Clients are encouraged to view their status on the SRD website for the exact date that payment will reflect in their bank accounts

It has been great to see pictures of graduation ceremonies taking place across the country in recent months. They represent the culmination of many years of hard work and a well-deserved reward, both to the graduate and the proud family.
But the bad news for the newly-capped graduates has been the news by StatsSA that the unemployment rate in the first quarter of the year has increased to by 0.8 percentage points taking it up to 32.9%.
This is to be expected in the first quarter of the year as matriculants and graduates join the economy and start looking for jobs. So we are faced with the situation where although the unemployment rate went up, there was actually an increase in the number of jobs in the South African economy in this time. It’s just that the increase in the number of jobs was smaller than the number of new entrants into the labour market looking for jobs.
When you are preparing for your Matric final exams there is no substitute for working through your text books and completing all the work in the syllabus.
To make sure you don’t get caught out in the final exams you do need to have a good working knowledge of all areas of the syllabus. If you don’t complete the full range of content covered in the syllabus you might get caught out with a question the final exam on a topic you have not covered.
Then once you have worked through all the content, the next step is to familiar with the type of questions that are likely to be asked and the way that you should be answering them.

Having things prepared in advance is always a good idea and avoids last-minute stress. Just as import as studying in advance, is making sure that you have all the documents you need for your matric exams – and for most people this only includes your SA ID card.
So as well as revising your work, going through past papers, and getting your stationary in order – you should also make sure you have your ID card and apply for a new one in good time if you haven’t got one.
Since 2013 the old SA ID book has been phased out and the new Smart ID Card has been introduced as the ID document that SA citizens and permanent residents have used to show their affiliation with South Africa.
The Smart ID system is a biometric identification system that uses smart card technology to store an individual’s personal and biometric information on a card.
There are several advantages to the smart identity document card over the previous green bar-coded ID book. It is more secure and difficult to forge, as it contains a microchip with the cardholder’s biometric information, including their fingerprints and a photograph.
You have to prove your identity when you write your matric exams and you can do this easily with your Smart ID card. Foreigners who are living in SA and writing matric exams should be able to use their foreign passports in the same way to prove their identity.
You can apply for a ID document when you are 16 so it is a very good idea to do that then. However, if you didn’t do that, or if your Smart ID Card has been lost, damaged or stolen since then, and you no longer have it in your possession, then you need to apply for a new copy.
So the best thing to do is to apply for the smart id card online now.
It is important to note that in the very rare occasion when you aren’t able to get an ID document from the Home Affairs department, the courts have ruled that you cannot be prevented from writing your matric exams. However, you don’t want to deal with this problem unless you have to – so if you can get an ID card it is important to do this while you can.

Because there are so many students around the city there are also many people who have catered for them by making private accommodation available to rent for students.
If you are one of the many students who will be moving away from home for the first time then choosing where to stay is a very important decision. It’s probably almost as important as making sure you choose the right course to study!
The simplest choice is usually to choose to stay at a residence run by the university or college that you will be studying at – if that is an option.
The advantages of living at on campus residences include that fact that it is convenient, gives you easy access to university resources and save time traveling each day. The great news is that the SRD grant was increased on the 1st of April 2024 and is now R370 per month.
The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) is the largest university in the region. and the only university of technology in the Western Cape. CPUT boasts more than 30 000 students, several campuses and service points, and more than 70 programmes.
You will find CPUT in Cape Town with the main campus in the city centre. There’s another campus in Bellville, a small one in Mowbray – and even one as far out as Wellington. CPUT offers a wide range of courses across all six faculties for prospective students to choose from.
Applications to study in 2025 opened on the 13th of May 2024.

Then of course when you see which campus you’ll be studying at, if you need accommodation then you will need to find student accommodation for CPUT that is available near the campus.
You will need your ID document for your application. If you ID has been lost or stolen it is best to apply for a new Smart ID online as soon as possible so that you don’t delay your CPUT application in any way.
People who are interested in being students at CPUT will need to take a look and read the updated information on the institution’s page for when applications will open for the upcoming academic year.

Students may also explore other tools such as online resources such as articles or the university’s official page for better results if they can’t get the much-needed support during recess as this is the time that has been set by the university for students and staff members to take a break from academics.
Here’s How CPUT Students Can Fund Their Selected Courses:
If you are a CPUT student in need of financial support for your selected course, it is best that you take a look at the different funding options that you might have.
The NSFAS accommodation allowance ensures that thousands of students can live near their institutions of learning through the provision of a student accommodation cap. The introduction of the cap in 2022 has been a contentious issue for NSFAS-funded students with some arguing that the
At the beginning of 2024, NSFAS implemented new accommodation caps with differentiation between metro (R50,000) and non-metro areas (R41,000). This adjustment, based on research, aims for responsible spending by the government bursary scheme. Non-metro institutions can propose higher caps, subject to NSFAS approval.
NSFAS administrator Freeman Nomvalo revealed that a team will be set up to evaluate the impact of the accommodation cap and whether or not it needs to be adjusted. They acknowledged that government resources are not unlimited and therefore need to be responsible for cap determinations.
We don’t have unlimited resources, we do take the concern that it [accommodation cap] may not be economical in some instances.
Nomvalo is confident that should it be determined that the current accommodation caps are inadequate, NSFAS will work to resolve any challenges it may cause.
The team that I’m going to be putting in place, we’re going to be evaluating those claims [the impact of accommodation caps] so that we can then see if there’s a need to review the policy position that is in place and if that need arises we will have a look at it.
However, an immediate adjustment to the accommodation cap may be out of the question. Nomvalo concedes that NSFAS must work in the current policy framework.
At the moment we have to deal with the outcome of past decisions and past practices that have resulted in the backlog.
Nomvalo adds that NSFAS’ main concern now is dealing with outstanding accommodation allowance payments to landlords to prevent students from being evicted.
Our focus is helping our students and therefore we’ve got to put every resource that we have into ensuring that this matter is dealt with.
Nomvalo acknowledges that businesses need to make money to operate and provide services to NSFAS students. They add that should NSFAS fail to resolve the outstanding accommodation allowance payments challenges, then students may suffer.
Businesses do not operate on spirits or anything like that, they need financial resources in order to operate, that is the fuel that makes businesses operate and that’s how we have to make sure we address this problem.
“If we don’t address it, businesses will close down, people will lose their jobs and all of those things we and most importantly students will be left stranded.”
Most student accommodation options usually has the standard furniture like a bed, desk, chair and cupboard for your clothing however everything else is up to you to bring.
What you should bring:
– Bring a desk lamp for late night studying.
– Pin board for notes and pictures.
– Pictures of your family to remind you of home and make your space feel a bit more comfortable during your stay.
– Two sets of bedding so that you can alternate when you do washing (Make sure you know what size bed you are going to be getting so that you can cater for the appropriate bedding size).
– Rug for the winter months.
– Do not bring all your clothing from home. Most of the time your cupboard space is limited and then you left with items that cannot be put away.
– A laundry bag to put all your dirty laundry in.
– Ironing board with an iron (ironing board is optional as you can always iron on your bed).
– Fridge (not a necessity however it is good to have a bar fridge in your room to store a few items you don’ want to share).
– A small dinner set that consists of the basics (cutlery, dinner plates, bowls) these are for days where you want to eat in your room or you’ve bought takeaways and you need to warm things up.
– A Kettle for late night tea/coffee making.
– Small storage containers for organisation and to put any additional items in (Example your study material).
– Bring Tupperware (You will also need Tupperware for storage of your food).
Some student accommodation offer catering included. This takes the pressure off you from having to cook everyday. However, you might not always be able to eat throughout the day.
We recommend that you take at least two of the meals you are offered and fit it in around your timetable. Example: If you need to be in class at 12pm only, then consider taking breakfast and dinner the evening. If your classes start very early you might need to skip breakfast and walk back to your student accommodation to opt for lunch and dinner.
Always make sure you have snacks in your room to grab or nibble on in the event that you do get hungry.
Most first years have a room mate or room mates. Have an open mind and no expectations when meeting your room mate for the first time. It is rare that you’ll hit it off the first time with your room mate and then things will just be bliss the rest of the year, but be open and understand that everyone is different. You might need to get use to their snoring or tolerate their bed not being made up or the late night partying that might happen, this is all part of the experience.
Always just have mutual respect and lay down rules from the beginning.
If you have a room mate that you can’t stand, it is OK. You don’t spend much of your time in your room anyway and when yo are there it might just be only to sleep.
Having people you can turn to at your student accommodation is also very important because they are your family away from home (besides your friends at uni). If you have an emergency or just need someone to talk to it is always good to have friends at your accommodation.
Living away from home can be a very scary and overwhelming experience at first. It is important to remember to keep things around you that will remind you of home. And if you are someone to call home everyday then that is also okay. Always ensure that you make the living experience pleasurable for yourself.
You’ll also need to remember that you will now have a lot of freedom, which comes with a lot of responsibilities. Things like budgeting, keeping your room clean, being disciplined and doing assignments. You are now accountable for and responsible for.
Side note: Make sure you thoroughly read through your student accommodation handbook to ensure you understand all the rules and regulations and also to make sure you understand what is on offer and what you need to cater for.
The NBTs are your tickets to university entrance as they let you show how well you can cope with language and maths tasks at university level.
The National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) are assessments that you will have to write if you want to study at universities in South Africa.
There are a few different dates available for you to write the NBTs at a university or school in your province. You can write them more than once so it is a good idea to try to write them early. Then if one of them doesn’t go well, you have the chance to re-write the test. You can also choose to write the NBTs online if you would prefer.
The NBTs were designed to assess the student’s ability to cope with university work by seeing how well they can transfer understanding of academic literacy, quantitative literacy and mathematics to the demands of university-level work.
The National Benchmark Tests consist of three multiple choice tests. These tests are written as a combined Academic Literacy and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) test, and a separate Mathematics test.
The AQL is a three-hour test that consists of an Academic Literacy (AL) section and a Quantitative Literacy (QL) section. The results of the two sections of the test are noted separately.
The second test that is offered is Mathematics (MAT), which is also multiple-choice and three hours long.
Depending on which university courses you are applying for, you may one have to write one, or both of the NBTs.
